Dear disappointed, Without a doubt there is something that impassions you. In the event that you despite everything can't, answer, ask others what you are capable in. Another method of characterizing abilities is your normal blessings or what do you have a talent for? Loved ones can assist you with noting that. Another alternative is to take a gander at sparks. Consider school or network ventures. What has roused you previously? Can't make sense of it on you own? You can take a test with the expectation of complimentary that will list your 10 sparks. Look at it here! Are there any social causes you put stock in? Any causes that line up with your qualities? ex: Red Cross, Cancer Society, and so forth. Moreover, interests truly tell the story. Or then again basically taking a gander at national word related codes. Bombing that. What books do you read? What motion pictures do you like? What music do you like? Now and again designs from those things develop. In the event that you have a supposed abhorrence for work, attempt www.fabjobs.com, which takes a gander at non-ordinary occupations. Guest Post What Your College Degree Means To An Employer

Guest Post: What your College Degree Means to an Employer A guest post by Aniya Wells There’s no denying the fact that college graduates face a tricky job market today. That will discourage a lot of new graduates, but there’s a silver lining to their predicament. The college degree that they labored so onerous to earn might be an important piece of paper of their job search â€" more essential than any resume or cleverly written cover letter. Not enough college graduates perceive that they’re a part of a fortunate demographic that will get first consideration when employers contemplate new hires. Despite what some critics claim, a college education remains to be the usual qualification for most entry degree skilled positions. Nevertheless, the job hunt may be exhausting and demoralizing for even probably the most extremely decorated college grads. A exhausting-earned degree might look like a waste of time (and cash) after so many job inquiries go unanswered. I’d like remind those disenchanted grads that their degree does have worth. This is what many employers actually think once they see a degreed job applicant worthy of the place. You’re a tough employee. No matter what you major was, I’m sure that the road to your diploma was no simple one. An English degree could be just as tough to earn as a degree in Engineering, and that truth isn’t misplaced on most hiring professionals. They respect job candidates who put the time in to earn a level, no matter what self-discipline it’s in. You invested years of arduous study, research, and private developmentâ€" and that’s what you should make very clear on your resume and during interviews. Think of it this way: different applicants should give you years of associated job expertise in order to compete with the degreed candidate. A degree is an emblem of hard work, and that’s one thing that you shouldn’t take frivolously. If you worked your way via faculty, make sure to talk about that with the recruiter; it’s an indication that you understand what it t akes to succeed. You have the dedication to see issues by way of to the top. Think of your school degree as a four-yr (or three, or five, or however many it took) long project, a project to which you devoted yourself utterly. Not every person can delay gratification and make that sort of dedication to a project, be it a school diploma or a business plan. That kind of dedication is extremely attractive to employers who search for consistency and tenacity in their hires. If you stayed centered long enough to complete your degree, an employer thinks, perhaps you've what it takes to compete. A college diploma is proof that you simply won’t duck out whenthings get powerful; you’re sturdy enough to stick round until the end. You’re a worthwhile funding. Above all, employers see younger, degreed job candidates as an investment in the way forward for their company. Someone recent out of faculty with a thoughts stuffed with ideas and optimism could possibly be a strong asset to any com pany. Some companies rent new graduates as a result of their lack of job expertise makes it simpler to coach them for firm-particular policies and procedures (no bad habits to un-study.) Others may need employees who can suppose like their younger clients. Do you agree with me? Are school degrees still as useful in this daunting era of recent employment? Or are they relics of the past? I’d love some suggestions! A freelance blogger and writer for over ten years, Aniya Wells now regularly contributes to the Onlinedegreeprograms.com weblog. She is passionate about giving potential college students advice as they embark on an internet or conventional diploma program. Is Your Firm Focused On Potential Clients In Emerging Industries

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Is Your Firm Focused on Potential Clients in Emerging Industries? On July 4, I read the Inc. Magazine list of  7 Companies Older Than America. I suspect these companies already have lawyers and even more likely do not need them. So those 7 companies might not be the best potential clients. What would be the best potential clients? A couple of years ago I wrote: Are You and Your Firm Focusing on the Right Clients? In that post, I talked about Fortune’s Top Industries.  I think it is also important to look at emerging industries.  Is your firm paying close attention to those? I think it is job 1 for finding clients with substantial growth potential. Just recently I read: China promises support for 7 emerging industries. The seven industries include: Is anyone in your firming learning the Chinese language? Will these also be emerging industries in the US and Canada? You might also read: What are you doing to stay on top of what industry sectors are growing? You might wonder how I happened to find these articles. It was really pretty easy. I get RSS feeds to  Forbes Entrepreneurs,    Business Week-Small Business  , CNN-Money Small Business  in my iGoogle and Google Reader pages. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

How to Explain Gaps in Your Employment Without Oversharing

The most effective method to Explain Gaps in Your Employment Without Oversharing The most effective method to Explain Gaps in Your Employment Without Oversharing 6 Simple Tips to Master Your Employment Gap Explanation With regards to clarifying a business hole, we frequently state excessively or excessively little - here's the manner by which to give the perfect measure of details. You removed some time from your profession, and that is OK. Possibly you kept an eye on a wiped out relative, took into account your children, sought after another degree, or ventured to the far corners of the planet. Whatever it may have been, you're currently prepared to bounce again into the workforce. One moment. On the off chance that yourresume uncovers any holes in work, expect employing supervisors to ask. Obviously, what appears to be a straightforward inquiry will be combined with a basic answer right? You know why you removed that time from your vocation. In any case, can you plainly clarify your choice and how it attempted for your potential benefit? All things considered, you're competing for an occupation against applicants who may flaunt later understanding. Rather than getting trapped stuck a predicament of stress and bungling your words (we've all been there), enter your meeting arranged to ace your business hole clarification. Here are six hints to assist you with defeating the unavoidable What have you been doing? inquiry question. 1. Don't overshare If not appropriately arranged, a snapshot of frenzy could prompt you to revealing an abundant excess data. Does somebody who's been sitting behind a work area for a long time straight, need to hear everything about your half year experience through Asia? Does the individual in question need to know how you managed it? Or then again that a merciless separation started it? Most likely not. Nor does the employing director need to know the bare essential subtleties of the diapers you've changed or how terrible little Tim is before sleep time. On the off chance that you've confronted difficulties and had to take a hole in work because of catastrophe or difficulty, be cautious here too.Sometimes individuals particularly negligible outsiders don't have a clue how to react with regards to melancholy, so extra them. And you surely would prefer not to separate in tears during your meeting. Attempt to hush up about those subtleties or among you and your advisor. 2. Offer a clarification You certainly don't need toovershare, but don't shroud yourself in secret, either. Rather, locate the correct equalization. Clarify you went on vacation to go through with your children, expected to decompress following a few high-pressure a very long time in your field, or that you confronted minimal decision and owed it to your mother to get her out. There's no disgrace in that. By disclosing why you chose for bail for some time (without oversharing), a recruiting director will probably feel increasingly great realizing what occurred and that you didn't simply flee. Significant note: Remember there's a contrast among clarifying and supporting. Try not to stall out feeling like you need to legitimize why you ventured away from your vocation. You're not out to demonstrate anything. 3. Feature new abilities Shockingly, changing a diaper in less than a moment doesn't consider another range of abilities (however that is an honorable accomplishment). Make certain to make reference to any charitable effort, classes, accreditations, or even meetings you went to during your work hole. In the event that none of those alternatives are important, realize you likely got another delicate expertise. Generalsoft skillsinclude correspondence, versatility, critical thinking, and basic perception. Recall toshow, not tell. Offer solid models and circumstances that show how you figured out how to more readily impart or how you turned out to be progressively open to adjusting to surprising circumstances. Having the option to show you've developed during your business hole is decent, so remember to feature it. Related:Top Transferable Job Skills Employers Look for in Candidates 4. Accentuate why now's the time On the off chance that you ventured away from your profession without a succinct course of events attached to your thinking, disclose why you're deciding to reappear the workforce now rather than, state, in about a year. Once more, be brief and don't feel like you need to legitimize your choice. Basically let the recruiting supervisor realize that you've done what you expected to do during your downtime and now you're prepared and chomping at the bit to return to work. 5. Be certain You should be 100 percent positive about yourself and your work hole clarification. On the off chance that you show vulnerability in your choice, the employing supervisor may feel somewhat uncertain, as well. Try not to make light of what you've been doing, either. Youonlycared for your wiped out mother? That is a substantial errand. Youonlytook care of your two children? That is no simple accomplishment. Youonlywent class kickoff for your graduate degree? That is a serious deal. Own your choice and clarify it obviously and unhesitatingly. 6. Proceed onward Now, you're most likely thinking about to what extent this clarification is going to last. There's no motivation to harp on your work hole. Without a doubt, it's in that spot on your resume, so get ready to address it, however don't feel like you have to recognize it for over a moment or two. Once more, offer a clarification, feature the positive results of your choice, and disclose why you're prepared to strike up your vocation once more. Don't overshare and don't invest energy attempting to legitimize your choice. Odds are, the stretch of time of your business hole is significantly shorter than the measure of experience you really have, so there's no compelling reason to let this concise snapshot of time characterize you or what you're fit for bringing to an organization. Study Pain actually travels just as quickly as touch

Study Pain really voyages similarly as fast as contact Study Pain really ventures similarly as fast as contact All warm blooded creatures have the neuroanatomy to see torment, the distinctions lie in the way in which the signs travel… or so we thought. In request to more readily decipher torment in youngsters and species that can't well-spoken languishing as shrewdly as over model, a grown-up human may, scientists have created something many refer to as a frown scale. This permits specialists to appraise the seriousness of agony in non-people as per objective and blinded scoring. It was recently believed that the movement time for the nerve flags that hand-off agony in human skin was particularly more slow than the ones that convey contact, when contrasted with different well evolved creatures. Anyway new discoveries distributed in the diary Science Advances sets the contrary. Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The capacity to feel torment is essential to our endurance, so for what re ason should our torment flagging framework be such a great amount of more slow than the framework utilized for contact thus much more slow than it could be? disclosed Saad Nagi to Medical News Today. Humans are furnished with high-edge and quick directing essential afferents.Nagi is the primary specialist behind the most recent report and an architect at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, and the Center for Social and Affective Neuroscience at Linkoping University in Sweden. Past exploration discovered that other non-human well evolved creatures had ultrafast nociceptors that empowered them to recognize torment boosts quickly. Utilizing a method called, microneurography Nagi and his group of specialists had the option to follow agony and contact signals in the nerve filaments of a solitary neuron. The group applied brush strokes to these neurons, however they didn't respond. Be that as it may, these nerve cells conveyed torment flags similarly as fast as contact touchy ones. They applied this procedure to a gathering of 100 solid participants. The built up ordinance was that in people contact was motioned by quick leading, thickly myelinated afferents, and the agony was conveyed by moderate directing daintily myelinated or unmyelinated afferents. Myelin is a blend of proteins and phospholipids that assist nerves with imparting signals all the more rapidly. The new investigation inferred that torment really ventures similarly as quickly as touch. Our outcomes challenge the reading material depiction of a quick framework for flagging touch and a more slow framework for flagging agony. We propose that torment can be flagged similarly as quickly as contact, clarified Nagi.Twelve percent of the neurons that had a thick layer of myelin displayed similar qualities of nociceptors, in that they had the option to dist inguish and convey possibly tissue-harming occasions like squeezing or stroking.

Top 10 reasons why constant complaining is so toxic in the workplace - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Top 10 reasons why steady griping is so harmful in the working environment - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog A while ago when I was all the while working in the tech business (I was a product engineer for a little counseling organization in my subsequent activity out of college) I had a manager that was will we say disagreeable. My colleagues and I loathed his guts and we grumbled perpetually about him. It arrived at where we couldnt start a gathering, eat in the cafeteria, or even go out for a brew without going through thirty minutes whining about him. We cried about his disposition, his ineptitude, his interfering, his cowardice heck, even his dress sense experienced harsh criticism. Be that as it may, of course, he is the main chief who has talked with me wearing a limited 80s-style purple, counterfeit cowhide tie. Be that as it may, did we ever let him know? Nooooooo! While we were bitching and groaning to ourselves, he joyfully went on as common on the grounds that nobody at any point grumbled to him. Which mightve appeared well and good when you consider it Thinking back, Im not certain that griping to him would have worked I think he was hopeless yet one thing is for damn sure: Out bitching about it, fun however it might have been, didn't improve things the slightest bit. Since that sort of incessant whining, supported or not, in the work environment prompts nothing but bad. Indeed, in can be out and out harmful and can make a division or even an entire organization an awful work environment. Heres why steady griping is so awful: 1: It exacerbates things look than they are At the point when individuals gripe, they center just around whats wrong. Things might be generally fine in the organization, however whiners just discussion about the issues, irritations and bothers they see. On the off chance that things in an organization are 80% acceptable and 20% terrible and you invest the vast majority of your energy considering the awful 20% the circumstance will look a ton more terrible than it truly is. 2: It turns into a propensity The more you grumble, the simpler it gets. At long last, everything is terrible, each circumstance is an issue, each colleague is a jolt and nothing is acceptable. The more you center around the negative, the harder it gets the opportunity to switch into an inspirational attitude. 3: You get what you center around As indicated by Wikipedia, Confirmation predisposition is: a propensity to look for or decipher new data in a manner that affirms ones previously established inclinations and stay away from data and understandings which negate earlier convictions. As it were, what you as of now accept impacts your impression of everything around you. That is the reason steady grumbling makes you see everything in a negative light, on the grounds that your psyche mind attempts to mention new objective fact fit with what you definitely know. 4: It prompts onedownmanship A whining meeting may go something like this: A day or two ago, my manager came shortly before I was leaving and requested that I finish two immense activities for him. I needed to remain two hours and missed my football match-up. Better believe it, well my supervisor instructed me to work this end of the week AND the following. Hah, that is nothing! My chief This kind of connection compensates the individual with the most exceedingly terrible story who can gripe the most intense. Not beneficial! 5: It makes individuals gloomy Not exclusively does consistent grumbling make you consider the to be as more regrettable than it truly seems to be, but since youre continually hearing accounts of how awful things are and how theyre continually deteriorating it additionally decimates all expectation that things can show signs of improvement. This obviously makes individuals less inclined to make a move to improve their circumstance, since everyone realizes its destined to flop in any case. 6: It slaughters advancement Since the circumstances looks so miserable, individuals become less imaginative and inventive. Whats the purpose of thinking of thoughts and executing them its never going to work at any rate. Likewise, constant whiners are the first to destroy any new thought. 7: It favors contrary individuals The best approach to get status among grumblers is to be the most negative. To be the person who sees everything in the most contrary light. Any endeavor to be certain or lively will be killed and positive thinkers will be blamed for being Pollyanna, innocent and ridiculous. 8: It advances awful connections Individuals who whine together join against the world and can make solid interior connections dependent on this. In any case, these connections depend for the most part on negative encounters. That is not beneficial. It additionally implies that you can possibly keep on being a piece of the gathering in the event that you can keep on grumbling, soiling you significantly more profound in an objection attitude. 9: It makes inner circles Being certain, hopeful and grateful makes you progressively open towards others regardless of what their identity is. It turns out to be anything but difficult to interface with colleagues in different offices, ventures or divisions. Griping, then again, makes individuals assemble in factions with their kindred grumblers where they can be basic and dubious of every other person. 10: Pessimism is awful for you Examination in constructive brain science has demonstrated that individuals who see the world in a positive light have a not insignificant rundown of points of interest, including: They live more Theyre more beneficial They have more companions and better public activities They appreciate life more Theyre increasingly fruitful at work We now and again feel that worry warts and whiners have the edge since they see issues sooner however in all actuality hopeful people not just have better existences, theyre likewise increasingly effective in light of the fact that they accept that what theyre doing is going to work. The consequence Steady grumbling in the work environment is harmful. It can deplete the satisfaction, inspiration, inventiveness and fun from an entire organization. Any place its going on it should be tended to and dealt with appropriately. Im NOT saying that we ought to never gripe at work an incredible opposite. In the event that you see an issue in your working environment, gripe to whoever can take care of business. What we ought to keep away from no matter what, is consistent bitching and groaning, where were continually grumbling about very similar things, to similar individuals, similarly, throughout each and every day. So what can be done? Well most importantly, every one of us can figure out how to whine valuably. This implies figuring out how to whine such that prompts the issue being fixed as opposed to all the more griping. Heres my post on how you can How to gripe valuably. Furthermore, we can figure out how to manage the interminable whiners we meet at work. Sadly, our conventional techniques like attempting to brighten them up or recommending answers for their issues dont work since grumblers arent searching for support or arrangements. Heres my post on the most proficient method to manage ceaseless grumblers. At last, you can prepare your own capacity to be certain. Much the same as whining can turn into a propensity, so can being thankful, idealistic and appreciative. You could proclaim today a positive day, you could take a couple of moments toward the finish of each work day to record five great encounters from that day or you could applaud an associate. Attempt it and let me know how it goes! Your take Yet, what do you think? Do you know any ceaseless grumblers at work? What is their effect? How would you grumble, when you see an issue? It would be ideal if you compose a remark, Id truly prefer to know! Related Here are some related posts about work environment grumbling: A genuine story on how being sure aides at work Go gripe. And since their last two announcements of Google for Jobs and  Google Cloud API, prior to the most recent launch of Google Hire I didnt want to write about the launch of their products or new services related to human resources. Its not just because seemingly everyone is writing about them, but because Im really over the products and technologies. You see, I talked in depth with Google a little over two years ago. No, I didnt sign an NDA. We discussed the industry. We talked about HR and recruiting technologies and apps that different sized organizations used. They told me they were expanding their Google for Work line of products in relation to their workplace Google Play store. Im not surprised they are launching an ATS or a new job search product that helps job seekers find work. Frankly, we needed these things 10 years ago. HR technolog y change moves at a snails pace. Microsofts Acquisition of LinkedIn Forced Googles Entrance into HR Googles launch of the three new products mentioned above happened because of Microsofts acquisition of LinkedIn. Google decided to jump into the human resources space to keep up with Microsoft and have access not just to customers but most importantly because of the data that these technologies will provide Google as they position themselves as a workplace technology provider that extends beyond email, file storage and digital advertising. If Google really wanted to make a splash, they would attack not just the small business market with their Google Suite products but go upstream. The majority of large companies do not use Gmail for their workplace email. The majority of companies  with more than 50 employees outside of Silicon Valley use Outlook email, and these businesses arent prepared to make a change. Imagine your 50 something CEO trying to use a new system like Gmail. They have a hard enough time using Outlook which took 5 years for them to master the ability to cancel and reschedule a meeting on the calendar. Companies greater than 50 employees might rely  on Googles Drive product for easy document storage but to really make a dent in the market, Google, in my opinion, didnt necessarily need to attack the HR market. What Google could have done is develop a project management tool that integrates with Gmail and a CRM but that would put Google not only competing with LinkedIn but also Salesforce which I guess to Google makes taking on the HR technology industry an easier task. What Google Doesnt Know About the Human Resources Industry and HR Technology Google I think is like many companies I talk with who are entering the HR technology industry. They dont understand the complexities of the market especially the HR compliance side of an ATS. Its not just simply a hiring software that integrates with email and a calendar. While buyers in most cases under 50 employees will be the CEO or CFO, once human resources or recruiting are involved in the decision and setting up procedures, its a much harder sell from that standpoint. They are more decision makers, influencers, and buyers at stake. There are a lot of strong players in the SMB (small to medium business) ATS market right now which include companies like Smartrecruiters, Lever, Greenhouse, Jobvite, Workable and Comeet. If Googles goal isnt to really help the hiring process, then they are doing just fine. Its just another option for small businesses to choose from. Afterall, Googles goal is simply a data play. Its just another option that makes it convenient, but its not really solving the bigger problem of hiring great talent and eliminating the hiring bottleneck that happens when you add in other collaborators, changing business targets and the people who are driving the business. I do not think that Google Hire will be able to move beyond employees over 50 and snag that data if they are going to require that employers only be GSuite customers. Im also certain that they are limited to this because Microsoft is making this difficult and they are blocking giving them API or access to calendars or data. As a Google Suite product user like myself has to operate in both worlds, and I tell you I feel the pain every day. Many of my clients and friends are on Outlook. I use Google and the calendars dont work together at all. Emails dont always sort correctly between the two different providers. The only benefit to signing with Google Hire would be increased search engine optimization which I dont know is enough for employers when Google doesnt provide a collaborative hiring and compliance platform that has robust features like those mentioned above and is willing to provide support to its customers beyond email. This is my biggest beef with Google as it takes an act o f God to actually talk to a real person about anything. Googles Foray Into HR Technology Legititimizes HR Googles launch into human resources shines a spotlight on the importance of the role of human resources in an organization. And for that I am glad. Those of us who have worked and invested in this industry have done so because we are aware of the value that HR brings. Will Google succeed? Im not certain, but Im glad that we, meaning HR is the topic of conversation. Its time for us to be in the spotlight and for that Im grateful.

8 Building Blocks to Bolster Your Employer Brand

8 Building Blocks to Bolster Your Employer Brand Today’s best employee candidates are busy, and may not be looking for your job or any new job. They have many competing sources of information, advice, and networking, and are choosy â€" often cynical â€" about what they read and hear. Thus, in reaching your best potential candidates requires finding and entering the world they live and work in, and inviting them into yours. And that requires creating your employer brand, just as you do for branding your products and services. Your employer brand must be consciously built, nurtured, promoted and reinforced in all the ways and places your potential employees access and are exposed to information â€" general interest media, business-to-business press, social media, special-interest websites and networks, word-of-mouth, and on smartphones, mobile devices, and computers. So if you need to build or refresh your employment brand, or just want to reinforce and promote it, consider (or reconsider) these requirements: 1. Be clear about what you want to accomplish There’s been a lot of buzz around employer branding as the war for talent has heated up. Before embarking on the employer branding journey, ensure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to scope, objectives and success metrics. 2. Don’t assume you know how employees feel Would you go with your gut when it comes to understanding your customer wants and mindset? That’s a high-priced gamble. Strong employment brands are derived from research that gets to the heart of what makes working for your organization special. 3. One size does not fit all Design your employer brand research and methodology to address your organization’s specific needs and culture. An off-the-shelf, “one size fits all” approach will, most likely, result in generic outcomes. 4. Employer branding is not only an HR initiative While it’s often driven by Talent Acquisition and the need to attract top talent to your organization, defining your employment value proposition and crafting your brand should be viewed as a business imperative.  Active involvement from key stakeholders across the organization and in the C-suite is critical for success. 5. I want to be the employer of choice Always a lofty goal, in the grand scheme of things it comes down to the fact that you can’t be all things to all people. That just leads to generic “me-too” positioning that doesn’t differentiate your organization from your competitor down the street. 6. The experience is the message Building brand loyalty requires every brand to live up to its promise. So if perception doesn’t match the reality, you’re in trouble. Your employer brand builds trust when it’s anchored in your core strengths as an employer, but also needs to speak to where the organization is headed. 7. Do you have Brand Ambassadors? Do managers understand and embrace the employer brand? Do their behaviors reflect and support the brand promise? Having managers and employees fully engaged brings the brand to life. 8. What’s in it for me? A common mistake of many organizations is to speak from the company perspective. Your employment brand is designed to set mutual expectations, telling candidates what you expect, and what they can expect in return. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, employer brands aren’t built and maintained with scattered efforts and isolated job postings. It takes careful positioning promoted with systematic and thoughtful content and messaging. It takes a compelling story, distributed in effective ways that surround potential employees, creating awareness and attracting interest. About the author:  Steve Graham, SVP, Global Employer Branding at TMP Worldwide oversees the global employer brand group, evolving the practice and driving innovation, while capitalizing on the ever-changing digital, social and mobile landscape. He assists clients in identifying, defining and communicating their employer brand, both internally and externally with an emphasis on developing innovative ways in which employees of an organization can organically embrace â€" and live the company’s brand attributes.

When to Submit DOC or PDF Resumes

When to Submit DOC or PDF Resumes You see the selection offered on almost every online job application,“Submit yourresume as a DOC or PDF”.Most people have a copy of both a DOC and PDF resume. You probably do as well, so how do you know which one is best to submit? The answer is a little more complicated than most realize.Reasons for Submitting a PDF ResumeA PDF resume removes the possibility of your resume accidentally being altered by unknown parties during the application process. You do not want to give strangers the ability to edit all the hard work you put into your resume. This way, people who receive your resume will get the polished resume you want them to see all of the time. In addition, a PDF resume will guarantee the formatting and design of your resume will remain unchanged.Reasons for Submitting a DOC ResumeIt is hard to argue with any reasoning based on “fear of what strangers might do with your resume”, but there are reasons to use DOC files, too. Most importantly, applicant tracking systems ha ve an easier time scanning all the words in DOC files. Some ATS software may have a difficult time scanning your PDF file, which means your PDF resume may fail to reach an actual person. Of course, as software improves this will no longer be an issue but for now, the problem still exists. Only about 80% of all ATS software can handle PDF while nearly 100% can handle DOC files.ConclusionIt is a good idea to have a PDF and DOC version of your resume. PDF’s will be better for sending to people you know, will be virus-free and much better looking in format than a DOC file. PDF’s are great resumes to send to referrals and they will look the same each time.A DOC file is a better choice when using online applications that will go through an ATS of some kind. You want to make sure all the important keywords are scanned properly. DOC files are also size-friendly for those online job application websites that have size limits on file attachments. If your PDF is too big, it is great to hav e the same resume on DOC. At the end of the day, you are going to need both because finding work requires a combination of networking with people and applying through online job applications.

How to Start Blogging in 5 Easy Steps

How to Start Blogging in 5 Easy Steps Today is the second post of a series of 5 posts about blogging: why to start, how to start, how to get readers, how to build community and how to monetize your blog. Step 1: Decide What Your Blog is About Dont over think this one.  You dont have to have all the details figured out to start a blog.  Although marketers will tell you to pick a very niche topic, I know tons of great popular bloggers who just write about their lives, their experiences or post pictures and videos of things they like.  If in doubt, pick a general direction and get started.  Your blog will naturally evolve over time.  For example: at different points over the last 3 years Ive considered focusing  solely  on personal finance, marketing to women and job searching- all very different topics.  These days Im writing more about entrepreneurship because thats where Im at in my life. And guess what?  Youre still here reading, right!? Once you start writing, youll start to realize what you truly enjoy writing about vs. what you thought youd enjoy writing about.  Ideas will come to you at strange times and youll have more to say than you thought. Note: if your end-goal is to monetize your blog, consider writing about products you can sell as an affiliate, topics that you could teach classes about or create e-books/information products about. Or, consider writing for demographics that are highly valued by advertisers (for example, Mommy Bloggers are huge). Step 2: Buy a Domain Name Anyone can buy a domain name, and everyone who is even thinking about starting a blog, business or building a personal brand SHOULD buy a domain name.   I use namecheap.com for my domain names but there are tons of providers out there that do about the same thing.   Domain names on namecheap.com currently cost less than $10/year. Buying a domain name will also allow you to have a custom email address ([emailprotected] instead of [emailprotected]).  It looks way more professional and it is super easy to set up.  Once you buy your domain name, go to manage domains and on the left side of the screen there will be an option called Email Forwarding Setup.  Enter the email address you want and where it should be forwarded (your primary email address). DONE! What if you can’t get the name you want? You can always consider buying a domain name with an extension other than .com. For example, .biz, .me, .tv, .info and .org are also popular choices. Step 3: Decide if you want to do a Self-Hosted Blog or WordPress-Hosted Blog Every blog needs a host.  Heres an analogy that may help you understand a little better.  Like your home, you cant build a website unless you have a plot of land to build it on.  So think of the host as the land/yard, your domain name as the physical house, and the content of your website (articles, pictures, graphics) as your furniture and belongings. Make sense? What the heck is the difference between Self-Hosted and WordPress-hosted then?! If you get your blog at  WordPress.com, your blog is hosted by WordPress.   This means FREE hosting that updates, upgrades, backing-up and site security is taken care of by WordPress.   In other words, wordpress.com is the way to pop up your site within minutes without any technical knowledge. If you can use Facebook, you can do this- I promise! Those who choose to go self-hosted will still use the same same free WordPress software, but will need to maintain the updates etc. independently.  Hosting usually costs about $80/year max depending on which provider you use. So, what are the perks of choosing a self-hosted blog? If you think youd like to grow a big following or even run your blog as a business someday, I highly recommend going with a self-hosted blog.   It may seem more expensive (and intimidating!) up front because of the hosting, but it gives you several more options right off the get go. You can install plug-ins which enhance your site big time.  You can think of plug-ins kind of like iPhone apps, there are some amazing plug-ins out there that really enhance the functionality and customization of the site. If you arent self-hosted, you cant add plugins to your site. You can completely customize your sites design whereas WordPress.com sites are limited to pre-made themes only You can post advertisements (banner ads) What kind of Plug-ins can I get? The list is seemingly endless, but here are some popular types of plug-ins: Spam blockers (for comments) Search engine optimization plug-ins Cool looking social media and sharing buttons Shopping cart Add ratings to your posts I started my site on WordPress.com but then had to pay someone to switch it over within 6 months  because  I wanted a more professional looking site. BUT, if self-hosting scares you to the point of preventing you from moving forward, just start a WordPress.com blog! Step 4: If youre doing a self-hosted blog, get a hosting package I use Host Gator for all of my hosting. I really like them in comparison to GoDaddy and BlueHost.  One of the most important parts of your hosting package is customer service. Ive always had great experience with Host Gators email, live chat and phone customer service no matter what time of day.  They are always quick to respond and Ive always had my issues resolved immediately.  Ive heard nightmares about other hosting companies that might be a few bucks cheaper. Often times my issues were simply a lack of understanding of how certain technology/processes work.  Youll probably call your host a lot in the beginning and thats ok. Youll learn a lot by spending some time with customer service! Full disclosure: Im so loyal to Host Gator that Ive become an affiliate for them, meaning I get a commission when people sign up for their Host Gator packages through these links. I buy at least a one year basic package so I dont have to worry about my website not being live one day  because  I forgot to renew. 1 year of hosting with Host Gator currently runs $60-80/year. Once youve purchased, sign into your “c-panel” (control panel) using the information in the “Welcome” email sent to you by your host.   It will include the login name, password and the URL for how to access your host.     Keep your Welcome Email with hosting info filed electronically handy for future use!  Scroll to the bottom of the control panel and click Quick Install then select WordPress.  Heres a video with instructions to give you a visual! Step 5: Create an About page, a Contact page and Write your 1st Post! Once people start reading your blog, theyll want to know who you are and how they can reach you.  Be sure youve created an About page with your picture, and a Contact page.  Include your social media contact info too!  If youre not comfortable posting your email address, create a contact form (for free) by using Wufoo.com.  Creating forms is so easy and all you have to do is copy and pate the code into the page you want it on.  When people submit the contact form, Wufoo will forward you their inquiry via email. Like I said in yesterdays post, you may feel weird when writing your first post.  Thats totally normal, and 99% of bloggers will tell you they felt the same way.  Dont worry about what people will think, who is reading it and dont worry about not having much traffic.   Congratulate yourself on taking a personal challenge and becoming a blogger! Want to learn more about turning your idea into a profitable blog or small business?  Consider taking our  WordPress Setup Camp  or joining a  Ladies Launch Pad  Incubator. Both classes are taught via Skype and in-person (Chicago).

5 Best Volunteering Opportunities for the Solo Woman Traveler in 2016

5 Best Volunteering Opportunities for the Solo Woman Traveler in 2016 Volunteering is one of the best ways to spend your holidays, especially when the journey is a solo effort. I used to do this when I was still single because there was no one to make me think twice about my choice destination. The advantage of volunteering is that you get to enjoy yourself while making an impact in other people’s lives. If you are the volunteering species, here is a compilation of the five best volunteering opportunities that you should try out as a solo traveler in 2016.   Elephant Camp Volunteering â€" Chiang Mai, Thailand There are many meaningful and enjoyable volunteering opportunities spread out across the globe. In my list, however, I chose Chiang Mai, Thailand as my top priority. You can participate in the most popular volunteering activity in Thailand of caring for elephants. This work entails saving abused elephants in the Asian country. You can clean their enclosures, construct their homes, prepare their food, care for sick or injured ones as well as feed their young. In fact, this becomes voluntourism; volunteering plus tourism! Summer Volunteering Program â€" Kathmandu, Nepal Second, you can go to Nepal in summer as a volunteer. In the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, there is an orphanage for children where poor and mentally-disabled children are taken care of. The volunteering activities include cleaning their houses, teaching them English, mending their laundry, cooking for them and providing the much-needed affection and attention. Childcare Project â€" New Delhi, India Third on my list is volunteering under the Childcare Project in New Delhi, India. There are many abandoned and destitute children that lurk on the streets. Luckily for them, the Childcare Project gets them off the street and distributes them in orphanage homes run by well-wishers; you, too, can be one. Just travel there on your next expedition and touch some children’s lives. You can take part in educating them, cooking, cleaning after them and so many other related activities. Teaching Project â€" Tamale, Ghana Next, we cross over to Africa. Let us go to Tamale in Ghana. In this city, many challenges affect the dwellers, such as poor sanitation, inadequate infrastructure, high unemployment rates and limited education opportunities. I will talk about the latter (education). If you can assume the roles of a teacher, then the children of Tamale need you very much. Apart from teaching in the many under-staffed local schools, you can help in stopping child labor, fighting preventable diseases or constructing classrooms. During your leisure time, move prestamos rapidos around and enjoy authentic African culture and meet African wildlife. 2 Weeks Special Volunteering and Travel Program â€" New Delhi, India Last on our list of the top volunteering destinations for 2016 is a 2-week special volunteering and travel program to India. In this package, the volunteers that have less than two weeks’ time to spare are brought together in one package. They give their contributions and are taken around several volunteer centers in India, such as the street children rehabilitation projects. Their mission is combined with leisure traveling for the two weeks that they are in India. There you have them, lone woman traveler; perfect volunteering opportunities for the coming year. I guarantee you that these are excellent opportunities. Hopefully, by the time you have visited them all, I will have more incredible destinations for you, right here! Enjoy yourself.

8 surprising things you should consider when applying for jobs - Debut

8 surprising things you should consider when applying for jobs - Debut Choosing what to do when applying for jobs can seem confusing and daunting. If you know what career path you want to follow, how do you decide what company you want to work for? And if you’re still deciding on a career, how on earth do you go about choosing your first money-earner? Salary. Location. Reputation. These are all factors that everyone considers before applying for jobs. It is easy to choose jobs just based on these types of considerations, but there are plenty of other factors to think about when looking for a job which suits you. No-one starting out should expect to know exactly what they want from their job, and anyway, this will probably change over your lifetime. But start by looking at other areas of your life â€" hobbies, studies, beliefs and relationships â€" and think about what is important to you when it comes to them. Then consider some of the following points alongside the usual ones. Company culture What does this actually mean? Even after doing some research and asking people around my office, I find it hard to define. But I’ll give it a go… A company’s culture is essentially the personality of the company. It comprises of different elements, such as company mission, working environment, employee treatment, and business goals. The company’s stance on these issues add up to create what it feels like to work for them. So overall it’s pretty important, but easy to avoid thinking about because it can be difficult to define. The best thing to do is to find out as much as you can about the company, including how it views the above issues, before you apply. It might even help you with the application questions! The commute You might think this is a silly thing to consider. If you find a good job, you’ll put up with any commute, right? Wrong. You must work out what your commute is going to cost you in both time and money. Consider; is your salary enough for you when you minus your travel costs from it? Does your commute time leave you with enough of an evening to enjoy? Can you face your commute on a dark Monday morning in January? If the answer is no, think about whether you want to apply to the job. Values and vision To be passionate about your work, you need to believe in what you’re doing; what your contribution means to the business and what your business means to society. Trust me when I say it makes a difference; it inspires you to be successful, ensures you work hard, and gets you out of bed even when you feel shattered. First work out what your vision is. Do you want to work for a company which directly improves the lives of people, makes better an aspect of our society such as healthcare, provides happiness and entertainment, helps run the country, or contributes to the economy? Or something else entirely? Then do your research! Delve through the promotional material, and find out what a company is truly all about. Look at what its aims are, what it delivers, and the successes it has had. What are its promises to society? Would you be proud to say you worked for the company? Opportunities or requirements to travel What’s your opinion on travelling for work and what type of travel do you have in mind? These are some important questions to ask yourself before applying to a job. You might crave a job that requires some international travel, in which case look at applying to global companies. Perhaps you’re interested in travelling to different places within the UK, to different company offices or to different clients, to add some variety to your role. Try to find out whether the job will lead to these opportunities as you progress even if they aren’t possible when you first start. Equally important is being honest with yourself if you don’t want to travel and checking that the job adheres to this. If you’re the type of person that doesn’t like the idea of spending nights away from home regularly then don’t apply to a role which needs this, even if you like another aspect of it. Employee expectations Every company is unique and therefore expects different behaviour and actions from its employees. Expectations can relate to anything; socialising, dress code, formality of behaviour, how many hours you work, and the list goes on. Ask yourself how you want to be treated as an employee. Do you desire a strict working environment with high standards of dress code to help you concentrate? Are you happy to work in a competitive atmosphere in which people will often stay late but get the salary to reward this? Or do you fancy a more relaxed environment with more casual dress codes and the radio on in the background? Company size This might be more important to you than you think. Company size can have a direct influence on the relationships you have with your employees, the opportunities you get within your role, and your chance for progression. There are pros and cons of all sizes. Mid-larger companies will often already have a reputation and be a good name to put on your CV, and they also might have well-established benefits, volunteering opportunities and the chance to travel. Smaller companies might give you more responsibility and more chance of progressing quickly to higher positions. It is a given that you will know more or all employees if you work for a smaller company. Contractual agreements You won’t see an official contract until you are made a formal offer of employment, but you can get your facts straight before this. The trick is to keep asking questions, the whole way through the process of applying and being made a job offer. It’s easy to feel worried about asking certain questions, particularly around salary, but the way I see it, the more useful questions you ask, the more interested you look. So check up on factors such as how long your contract would be, will you be offered a job at the end of your scheme, are you required to pay for anything like training, and is there any vital travelling involved. Write a list of you think your job could impact your life, and ask any questions relating to it. Work/life balance This is a huge deal, but people rarely weigh it up properly before accepting a job. I personally have friends who opted for a graduate scheme which paid them well, but now want to change jobs because they have to work late, have very little time to themselves in the evenings, and feel exhausted by the time the weekend arrives. I’m not saying choose the easy ride. If you love your job or you are pursuing a specific career path to get to the place you want to be, then working hard is vital and you should be prepared to put in every effort. You just need to decide what is important to you. Do you need a reasonable amount of time away from work to pursue interests that you see as just as important as your job? Or are you determined to follow a dream which requires you to work hard and leaves you with less of your own time? Your own work/life balance is up to you to decide.
